Encinitas, California

Encinitas, CA Real Estate, Encinitas Area and Community Information

Encinitas, California, is a northern San Diego County community that is nestled along the Pacific coast approximately 25 miles from San Diego's downtown. Interstate 5 efficiently transports citizens north to Los Angeles and south to San Diego. Today, about 60,000 individuals live in this affluent community along the beach.

History

Gaspar de Portola was a governor of Baja California that led an expedition here in 1669. Two centuries later, a family chose to live alongside a lagoon, and the surrounding area would eventually be named Cardiff-by-the-Sea to pay homage to Cardiff, Wales. More development occurred when Jabaz Pitcher settled on top of a plateau here in 1881. When the railroad was routed though the region, the local economy prospered.

Parks and Recreation

The heritage of Encinitias beaches includes a reference in the lyrics of the Beach Boys' "Surfing' U.S.A." Specifically, a popular surfing location in front of Swami's is mentioned in the song.

Moonlight State Beach got its name from a tradition of having midnight picnics along the beach in the light cast by a full moon. Today, swimmers, sunbathers, surfers and fishermen all come to this state facility to relax. Beach volleyball and tennis are also popular pastimes. Equipment rentals allow those without the requisite equipment to still enjoy the waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Attractions and Activities

Those seeking tranquility and relaxation may want to venture over to the San Diego Botanical Garden, located in Encinitas. Dozens of themed gardens feature plant species gathered from around the planet. A lengthy boardwalk takes hikers through a chaparral and sage area that features native species. This is a great place for leaving all of the hustle and bustle of daily life behind.

Events

Encinitas hosts a series of important festivals every year. In April, the April Street Fair comes to downtown Encinitas, and Encinitas Environment Day is held in June. The Olivenhain area hosts Oktoberfest in the fall. The event is scheduled so that it is held at the same time that the centuries-old original Oktoberfest is held in Germany. Visitors head to downtown Encinitas for the Fall Festival. Artisans display their best creations, and food vendors offer widely varied cuisine.
